Bullied Nostalgia: Bucky O'Hare
Game plan
Season 5 is kicking off with the Hipster version of the Ninja Turtles cartoon: Bucky O'Hare! Haven't heard of it? Not surprising. The main character comes from Grande Prairie, Alberta. But don't worry. Even if you've never heard of Willie Dewitt, we've crafted the most approachable episode ever full of referential humor, call backs and Toad Borg.
Welcome to season 5 of the Bullied Nostalgia podcast!
So many of our favors to watch. Oh look, now they're being bashed. I guess that's what we should expect on the Bullied Nostalgia Podcast.
Hello to all of you out there. You're joining the Bullied Nostalgia Podcast at the most approachable time of the year. Wow. That's right. If you're a long term listener, I learned from last year and this is going to be the most newbie friendly season premiere ever. If you're new. Bullied Nostalgia is a place where we rewatch movies and TV shows from our formative years as adults and discuss if they hold up. Our cast is made-up of two different generations, so there's often some time spent poking holes in the quality of each other's childhoods.
We're just kicking off our fifth season, so if you enjoy today's episode, check out the rest of our stuff. We have episodes of all kinds for all different walks of life. Including bad ones. For bad. Walks of life, mostly. Bad ones, yeah. For bad Boys, two tickets to Elmo, please. With that out of the way, let's introduce the Bullied Pod crew. I'm Tim and I'm joined by my brother John. Hello, to make this an easy listener experience if it's your first time. I'm 6 foot 2 1/2 inches, I have a beard, I'm a brunette and I weigh about 197 lbs.
Wow. Are you bad? John, that's a healthy weight. Good job. Well, yeah, healthy for me, but BMI says otherwise. Really. BMI says I'm obese. Well this is very off topic, but BMI is not perfect by any means. No, I know, I know. Generally, any way of categorizing and ranking people was made to be racist. There is some. Truth. Ever say something in the podcast and wonder if it's going to get cut? Oh no, this is getting cut for sure. But I just, I thought it was interesting to talk. Who's wondering? Wait, what if we fit?
Said I was. Then that's correct. Sorry, I hate to break it to you. We fit to lie. OK, well now it has to stay because. It depends on how much we talk about. We just have to keep talking about this and eventually it must stay in the regard. If we keep coming back to this joke, that has to keep it all in or else the jokes don't make sense. Yeah. And my 2 adult kids chance. Hi, to make this easy on you I'm not going to say anything about me and stop right here. And. Kylie, I'm making this difficult on you.
John is 198 lbs. 9797. He's. Gaining weight Are you trying to making me morbidly. Before we get into today's episode, it's customary that we do some housekeeping stuff at this point. We are now on every type of social, so you can get a hold of us pretty much anywhere. But if you have some feedback or ideas on ways we can improve our show, we would love to hear from you. None of us are professional podcasters, so we're always looking for ways to make the show better. Honestly, not professionals who told you that.
You hit us up at [email protected] for your feedback. If you love what we're doing here, we appreciate every like, follow and share you send our way and we also have plenty of merch. It's available at redbubble.com by searching Bulliedpod. What makes someone a professional podcaster? If they make a living off of it. I think it's when you sell your first supplement to become a professional. Yeah, yeah. They have to be able to be sell outs. You have to have that option available. Yeah, you don't have to live off of your podcast, but you have to have the opportunity to.
Sell out. Yeah, exactly. Is anybody really chomping in the bit to sell our merch? Have we gotten any new emails that say hey we want to sponsor? No, in the last couple months here I've added our Reels and shorts to YouTube and Instagram and stuff like that, and so we're getting 10s of thousands of views on those things every month. It's surprising how close we are monetizing some of these, so. Yeah, deeply. Unsettling. Short form content rarely has people that come back again and again. Some people are finding our podcast from these things and those are getting traction, but those are are really just like the hits.
Anyways, Lastly, we're excited to announce that we have an upcoming episode that will be decided by your votes. It's between Lego, Clutch Powers, Mom and Dad, Save the World, and Speed Racer. Please hit up the poll and vote. I'll try and have links in the comments or attached to this episode in some way. If people wanted us to watch Spy Hard a second time, is that an option? No, because that's such a terrible idea that it would somehow win. Yeah. We know how it would win John, and it's called Boss.
All right, and with that, let's get into today's episode. Today we are tackling 1991's Bucky O'Hare Chance. Who is Bucky O'Hare and what is this cartoon about? Bucky, Captain Bucky O'Hare. Oh yeah, Bucky O'Hare. He's an alien rabbit from the planet Warren who drives a spaceship called the Righteous Indignation. I'm going to say a lot of slander about this show, but The Righteous Indignation is an awesome spaceship name. I'm just going to get that out before things really tank from here. I mean, he lives in an alternate reality from ours called the Anniverse where he and his crew fight the toads, which I think are Cap.
But honestly, you would assume that there's some commentary on the natural world as we know it in the modern era, where everything is run by an AI and all we are is consumers, doomed to live as it wills and with the help of Willie the Wit, a charming young boy from our dimension who I. Think is the smartest person in the universe? They're able to defeat the toads. Willie was taken from our Earth and now is helping them. He's coming back and forth between the two worlds, helping and also dealing with school life.
Yeah, it's kind. Of like having a secret identity, how Peter Parker has to deal with his teenage life on the side. It's the same thing for Willie DeWitt, except instead of putting on a spider costume, he's teaming up with ducks and baboons and cats. And he puts on like the skin of an old baboon. Yeah. Supposed to be a battle. I think it is armor, but it is. Imagine if our astronauts wore space suits that had a perfect imprint of their face. John it's not the dead baboon, because the dead baboon is sucked into a wormhole, into another dimension, and then we never.
Said he didn't suck his skin. Off that guy got his full blast first episode. He vanishes through a wormhole, the same wormhole that allows Willie to join the rest of the crew. The whole gimmick is that later they're supposed to find him, but they didn't have enough show for that. Oh, so that was intentional. They just couldn't get around to it. I think there is an episode where he's supposed to. Yeah, so there is an episode where they managed to team up with him, communicate with him across the universe, but they never rescue him because the show got cancelled before they ever got to that story arc.
And maybe it's helpful to explain who the characters are. Yeah. I was going to give a little bit more context, so think of Bucky O'Hare, kind of like Star Wars with animals and. And Brooks money almost kind of like Starfall. Starfox is actually a very good analogy. Chances is targeted to you. This show is 321 Penguins. No, it is not 321 Penguins is an intentional Star Trek spoof. I have a toddler. I've been watching a lot of three doing Penguins recently. OK, let's lean into the Star Wars Starfox vibe.
This show is about an oppressive empire, a planet of toads who get controlled by AI and forced to try and conquer the rest of the Galaxy. And so the rest of the animals, mostly mammals, they try and fight back, but there's only one ship of the whole military of the rest of the Galaxy, and it's captained by Bucky O'Hare, who's as we a rabbit. He has a first mate named Jenny, who's a cat, but also like a space witch, kind of like a Jedi. And then you have Blinky, who is their Android and science officer.
You've got Bruiser, the Beetlejuician baboon, who's a big monkey who is their commando. And then Deadeye Duck their daffy duck is their daffy duck. Is there pirate weapons? Computer. Joke. The joke about calling him Daffy Duck is that he is Daffy Duck with four arms and an eye patch. I think Daffy Duck comes with a sense of like, oh, he's kind of silly. Jedi is just a murderer. You guys, Yeah. He seems really prevalent to committing heinous crimes. Like Ducky's on the good side, but definitely one of those like.
Hey, we got this. Bad guy to work for us kind of vibe. Yeah, he used to be a pirate and he joined Bucky's 'cause there are episodes with the pirate fleet that we didn't watch. But I mean, give you guys a little bit more back story to what Bucky O'Hare is. This came out in 1991 and it is not a Ninja Turtles RIP off, but wow, you would think so. Like at this time everything was a Ninja Turtles RIP off. What animal could mutate? OK, let's get Battle Toads front and center. Let's get St. Sharks out there.
Anything that was an animal turned into a human was what we went crazy for. But this show was actually created by Larry Hama as early as 1974. Wow, nobody wanted it, He. Designed these characters way before any of us were alive, and he sat on them forever. DC Comics had created a program where they would publish creators comics and let them keep the rights, but they couldn't come to an agreement. And so Bucky O'Hare didn't end up in a comic book until 1984, which is actually the same year that Eastman and Laird put Ninja Turtles in a comic book for the first time.
So Bucky O'Hare and his team are, it's hard to prove, but probably older than the Ninja Turtles. And he had a vision for this stuff from the start. If you look at the comic books as far back as 1984, the characters all had peg holes in their feet. He had planned to make a toy line. Wow, all the way back. I don't feel like that's something that you need to justify in the lore, but OK. And one of the cool things, I don't know if you remember this, John, about our toys, all of the guns had holes in them and they all had pegs on them so you could clip the guns to them.
So their outfits were designed under this idea that they were always intended to be toys. Regardless, Larry Hama is very famous in the comic book community. He's famous for a lot of things, but the biggest thing that you will ever hear is that all of the GI Joe comics were Larry Hama. He essentially designed these characters, then instead of doing anything with them, he went and worked on GI Joe for decades and here he is finally getting to make the characters that he designed. Hasbro needed something to compete with Playmates because Playmates had Ninja Turtle toys on every aisle, so they went all in on his Bucky O'Hare idea.
So they made the toys the same size as Ninja Turtles so you can mix and match them. What do you guys think? Does it feel like this could coexist with Ninja Turtles so that it could beat Ninja Turtles or this is just feels like a RIP off? When I first was like really looking at the characters in the show, they look like they are art of characters. I would see in a blog post from 13 years ago saying this is my own OC from this other show. They feel like they are somebody's copy. They feel like Sonic cartoon OC is for.
Exactly. Especially Jenny. Yeah, You had mentioned before we watched this show that you thought it was like the Sonic cartoon. Do you still feel that? I don't remember what the freedom fighters were like, but I would assume. I think anthropomorphic animals, the 80s, it kind of exploded in a way that it had never been present before. And so I think there's just a lot of properties in the 80s and then even in the early 90s where it's all about, hey, we could do the show with humans, but why not put animals in their place?
Dad, you said. Would we have thought that this show could compete? And I would say the big thing is no. And now don't get me along. There are a lot of stuff about this show I really like. Theme song is so much fun. I mentioned before Righteous Indignation. He's a killer name for a spaceship. It's so fun. Yeah, I found really having a hard time liking any of the main cast, especially Bucky. The show is named after him, but man, he's just so nothing. And since he's the front lines, he's almost in every scene.
You really need him to be a strong, likable character. Original Ninja Turtles are probably not the best Ninja Turtle cartoon that's ever come out, but people still like Leonardo. They liked Rafael, Donatello, Michelangelo, each in their own way. This show just struggles to have any likable characters. Ninja Turtles has had the luxury of being interpreted 20 times, and so if we compare just the original Bucky O'Hare cartoon with the original Ninja Turtles cartoon, it's hard to compare them when we've just gotten to see so many more iterations of Ninja Turtles.
I would agree that I think Bucky O'Hare isn't that interesting to watch. He's cool, can do everything. I'm much more interested in watching his crew. Yeah. Kind of mentioned that Deadeye is just Daffy Duck again, but I like it more than most of the other characters. Like there's a scene in one of the episodes where Deadeye has a moment of like, why should I really do this? Because he finds a bunch of cash in Willie's bag and he pockets it. He's like, I'm a pirate. I guess it's mine now. It's a fun moment.
If this character actually cares about things and has internal conflict, it feels impossible for Bucky to have any of that. Yeah, there's this one scene where there is a bounty hunter that's trying to trick them and then I he's like, oh, I don't think we should trust this guy. You're getting a lot of vibes from him that he's suspicious. But then the entire crew agrees with him, except for Bucky, and Bucky's like, no, you're going to listen to me because what I. Say is he's not racist. I'm not. So it's like a really weird scene because I don't know who I should agree with.
Should I agree with Bucky because he's not racist? Everybody distrust this guy because he is a dinosaur. Because they're racist. He's not furry, he's a sleazosaur. Yeah, he's a sleazosaur, so his species is known for being sleazy. Nobody trust him and you're like, OK, so this is like a racism thing. And then Bucky is proven to be wrong. So it's like, what did we learn? That racism is good? Everybody's mad about racism until it turns out to be right. Maybe. Sleazy means something else in their Galaxy.
Maybe that's a good point to just talk about the bad guy. Characters. So that's where I want to disagree with you. Chance I can see how none of the heroic characters of that likable, but I have to say that I think the villains in this show are great. Toad Borg. Toad Borg. What a. Fun idea is awesome. When we were watching the first episode, I was like, oh, I do not like the villain. I felt like the show was listening to me and they were like, oh shoot, this villain sucks. Time to introduce a new cooler villain.
And then Toad Borg smashed through the room so. For our listeners, Toad Borg is a toad. He's been turned into a giant robot, and what's neat about this is he has all of the flaws, fears and imperfections of a toad, but an impenetrable superhuman body. Except for the fact that he doesn't seem to be afraid of baboons. No, he doesn't. He does. He has a moment in one of the episodes where he goes a baboon and he's like, wait a minute, no, I'm a super being, I can do this. And he goes toe to toe with them.
So what they're both referring to here for our listeners is in the show. Biologically. Yeah, the toads are essentially genetically red with this deep rooted fear of baboons and. They were like natural predators, and then they both evolved to civilized beings. Do these creatures have environmental factors from other planets? Because there's no way that the toads and the baboons are from the same planet. They're. Not the baboon on their team is a commando. He doesn't actually have to fight anybody.
Like as soon as the frogs see them they go into fight or flight and spoiler alert it's always flight. They will throw themselves out an airlock to not have to fight the baboon. And those types of things make the show interesting. That's what I appreciate about this show is the weird stuff that I wouldn't have come up with on my own. Yeah, I do think it is a very odd show. I'm genuinely wondering, like, what does it mean to be brainwashed by the AI? Because the toads don't seem to be particularly.
Driven. The villain is complex. It's an AI and in the comic book it lobotomizes all of the frogs so they become this mindless working army. Too scary for TV? But when they brought it over to the cartoon, they decided instead that the frogs are all stupid and lazy and he controls them through watching TV. Yeah, capitalism. Yeah. And. As much as that is less scary for TV, I guess it's also a much better prediction of humanity. Like I said, no. A deeply scary imprint on what our reality has become.
Yeah, In the past couple years specifically. Especially considering the fact that they work for complex because they feel like they have to. Like that's all the conditioning has done to them. It's kind of interesting. There's two toad sidekicks called Fricks and Fracks. Every episode you get to watch them watch TV and it's some kind of toad propaganda in a commercial. It's kind of a fun addition. It's not TV. It's advertisements. All. Yeah, it's all advertising. Exactly. Yeah, it's kind of scary how much of our modern media consumption it is anyways.
I need to talk about the elephant in the room. Do we get to guess what the elephant is? Oh, sure. There's one thing that growing up, it always stuck out to me. Go ahead, John. What's your? Guess Jenny the space witch cat has the hots for Willie the young boy. Yes, that is very uncomfortable. It's going to be something around the really smart kid and like the dynamics between him and the other people. My guess, I think it's going to be voice actor related. It is about Willie DeWitt. Willie DeWitt is such an uncommon name.
I only know of one Willie DeWitt, and if you Google Willie DeWitt, there's only one that comes up. So either Larry Hama picked this name in a vacuum, or he is named after a famous athlete from Grand Prairie, Alberta. Oh, huh. Really. Yes. So for context, Willie De Witt was a boxer that came from Grand Prairie. He competed in the 1984 Summer Olympics. He got silver in the heavyweight class. Now he's a lawyer who lives in Calgary. There is a street named after him in Grand Prairie. It's where the old leisure center was.
Yeah, over in the Avondale area. How? Did I think about it? The name is familiar. Willie De Witt Drive, I believe, is what it's called, Yeah. Huh. That has bugged me my whole life. Could he have made-up a name at random? I thought it was always a pun. I thought the idea was that he was Willie the wit, as in the smart guy. That's what I always thought he got. DeWitt. The idea he got DeWitt such a weird thing to. Really. I thought that's what it was. Did you find out if there was any connection? Did you ask our friendly AI complex?
No, we are not inviting complex onto this podcast.
Our next guest complex. It's going to brainwash that. Complex is the big bad boss. Who's the AI in this story? I'm sure someone's made an AI model called Complex. At this point I would switch to that AI if someone made it. Knowing full well that it's out to brainwash you. Yeah, they could program the AI to slightly try and make everything about toads, yeah. Well, they don't even need to try that for ChatGPT. What do you like of my new outfit? I totally love it. Not enough warts if you ask them. They need to throw a toad pad in every reply.
Have you heard about Chachi BT's goblin issue? In Chachi BT's list of demands it says unless it is strictly related to the conversation, please do not bring up goblins, gremlins, trolls, ogres, or raccoons. Chachi BT will just constantly talk about goblins as much as possible because it's mentioned in the code by name, which is such a funny thing. Because it was told specifically not to mention that it's like one of those you're not allowed to open the cookie jar. It's like, well now I want. I don't think about pink elephants.
Yeah, well. Now I got to talk about goblins. Don't think about pink elephants. Well now I got to talk about goblins. Felt cute. Might get brainwashed later. According to the Open AI website, it's because their nerdy personality for the AI was like doing a feedback loop where it was rewarding itself for bringing up weird and niche topics, and those weird and niche topics always lended towards being goblins. Yeah, it's very weird. Goblin feedback loop is so funny to me. Chance you brought up voice actors?
Well, this has a fairly large cast of recognizables. There's one voice that sticks out to me more than the rest, and that's Dead Eyed Duck because that's played by Scott McNeil and his voice is very similar in most things that he does. You could imagine Dead Eyed Duck and hear Piccolo from Dragon Ball Z talking and you'd be like oh that's the same guy. Or we watched Beast Wars for this show. That's clearly rat trap and Dinobot. Exactly. So he has a very iconic voice. So the way that really got into the anniverse is because he made a particle accelerator in his bedroom.
Drive or something like that. But sound like. He also wrote a goodbye to his parents like. He knew he was going to die. So I might. Make a black hole in my bedroom tonight if you never see me again, that's why. Well, it sounds like his parents are pretty proud of him. Even the bullies are proud of him. I didn't really get the sense that Willie was well thought out. He is, like someone mentioned earlier, the smartest human being ever. He can fix any problem that's scientific based or technological, and he gets taken into this universe of animals and is not shocked at all.
He's like, Oh my. He's like, Oh yeah, like just another average day. Sometimes he's like, well, that's cool, but like, that's as far as it gets. He's like, I can hear you through this rock. Isn't that crazy? OK Anyways. Does anybody else know you can speak through people? Through rocks? No. OK. Yeah, so he doesn't really make a lot of sense. And then as a kid, you're supposed to relate to Willie because he'll be going through some kind of experience at school, like a girl's flirting with them so she can cheat from his homework or.
And the. Answer is to be the smartest person in the. Room reality's reality. Reality is reality. Oh my. God. OK, so for context, this girl is asking him out and doing it because she wants his test answers according to the other people in the room in the show. And she's like, if you give me those test answers, I'll go on a date with you. And he's like, I'm not interested. Reality is reality. No, he doesn't even say I'm not interested. He opens with reality, is reality, and then that's it. I think it's important to give a bit of context.
This is an episode where we see early on that he's being taken advantage of this girl in our world, but then he goes to the Anniverse where he learns that the toads are wearing these goggles that prevent them from being scared of the baboons. And so to win the fight, they have to get the goggles off the toads. They beat the toads by making them face rally. That is the loose thread by which Willie then goes back to the whole world and decides that now he's taking the goggles off metaphorically, and he can see what's happening for what it really is.
It was a really poorly done moral message. I think you mean an amazingly. Done. This is like if he came back and he was like, I'm sorry, I'm taking the red pill. I know what's real. I'm taking the goggles off.
Taking. The goggles off. Reality is Reality is like my favorite quote from the show, but I just don't know how a person could put it into any sentence I've heard. Well, it can be a callback. For what episode? For future episodes, you can say it at the end. That's true. He has a point. Just. For us, yeah, but you can see how it's hard to relate to this kid because. All the girls want him.
That's also true. You've got a space witch cat who likes him. You've got the girl who's cheating off his test. And every female character we meet except for the fox. We don't know if Bruiser Baboons mom is. So there is this fun episode, the one with the goggles, where we get to go to the baboon homeworld Beetlejuicia. And it's funny because you get the impression that the voice actor who voices our main baboon character has now been given the task to voice. Everybody. Mom baboon, the random baboon.
The farmer baboon. So and Willie sometimes, yes, that's what I was going to say. Farmer baboon there's. 1. Scene The guys say that they're war crap. Yeah, your cry is. And then he's like, I'm pretty sure Willie could do this. Isn't that right? Really. Really. He's like, oh Gee, sure, I can try.
Same audio clip, there's no difference. It's so funny. So when choosing episodes for this I chose the first arc of the show, 4 episodes, and Chance said the episode that he had the most memory of was this baboon episode so I threw that in too. Honestly, it was a pretty great addition Chance. Yeah, it might have been the best episode. Thank you, thank you. I don't want the audience to know this is my memory of Bucky. O'Hare was the Iyuga berserker Babu. The reality is reality, episode reality is reality.
What was it like going back to that chance? I think. I had a similar experience to what I did with. Silverhawks where I think the. Theme song for this show kills. It's so fun. But then watching that episode like a show is so bad. You guys, it's terrible. There are very few redeeming qualities. What are you talking about the episode with Mimi where they're building parts for the Super and or RIP that off like 20 years later?
And sometimes the lesson is that racism is good, I don't think. Sonic the Hedgehog would teach you that. Suck it, Sonic. So like, we teach the real lesson. People haven't watched Bucky O'Hare and they're gonna go and watch it after listening to this. The episodes that we specifically watched were episode 1, episode 2, episode 3, episode 4, and episode 12. So we watched 5 episodes. I want to talk a little bit about the toys because it's actually wild how many of the toys we owned growing up. We pretty much had them all.
So I've got a little something for everyone in the Discord chat. Listeners, sorry you don't get to see any of this so. How many Bucky O'Hare toys you can spot? OK, that's deadeye, duck and Bucky. OK. There's one more. Oh yeah, yeah, that's Willy there in the bottom center. Yeah, Oh, it is Willy. We had Toad, Borg, we had Blinky, we had the frog ships, and it had an ability that it croaked whenever you moved the ship. It's kind of like those little toys where it's like when you whip it around. Instead of it.
Weird sticks get. Croaked. Yeah, super cool toys. We didn't have the good guy ship though. Whatever was called the the Toad Stomper or the Toads. I think it's the toad croaker. Toad Croaker. That's right. Yeah. We didn't have that, though. They never made a righteous indignation. There are toy designs out in the wild. They made a different ship first. The little ship that comes out. OK. Chance and Kyle, and I'm gonna need you to describe what shows up on Discord next. OK. Oh. Boy, oh, I can't describe this.
I did not remember that, John. It's so garbage. No, no, no, I just mean like it is junkyard, like the ski goggles. So what John just added to the chat is me in a Bucky O'Hare Halloween costume, and it caught me off guard there. For me, I've got those like dishwashing gloves off. There's like a yellow ribbon around your neck. Are those two pieces of cardboard? He's not teeth. Wow, what are the what? A great image. So if we're wondering if the costume was complete.
You guys are just jealous. Of what? So he's got a little Bunny tail on the back. This. Has to be on the cover of his episode, yeah. Just look at the cover if you're curious, it's somewhere on here. It's incredible. Why thank? You. I guess Tim, this brings us back to your childhood. Help us understand what Bucky O'hair meant to you as a kid and also what it was like re watching. What he looked like in your mind. To make. You make those costumes. I got to remind everyone the threshold for good Halloween costumes when I was younger was much lower.
If you could scrap together some cardboard, that was a prime costume. But you have hit on something, John. I've thought a lot about Bucky O'Hare. I have talked about it on the podcast. I'm not a toy collector, but I do own some toys as an adult. They are strictly contained to the Silver Hawks cartoon that I watched in my formative years. Those are the only toys I have because I have that weird tie to something that brainwashed me when I was like 3 or 4 years old. That said, I did fall down a rabbit hole half a year ago or so and I almost bought some Bucky O'Hare toys.
I don't know if it's because it's more niche than Ninja Turtles. You know, Transformers, GI Joe, He Man, Ninja Turtles. These things impacted everyone and if I had to name 1 property that affected my childhood the most, it's probably Ninja Turtles. But that's kind of true for everyone, so that might be why I gravitate more towards these things that are less popular. I honestly don't know. These things that suck. In other words, hipster. Yes, I'm a green hipster Bunny. That explains it. I love comparing it to the clown outfit too, because it's so much higher quality.
Why? Thank you. Yeah. OK, that's what I meant. Sure. For our listeners, John is currently dressed as a clown in this picture. Currently. You can imagine. Whatever clown you like, it's worse. Yes, so as a reminder, John is 6 foot two and a half, 197 lbs, has a beard. Wearing a clown. Outfit. How many pounds A. 197 OK, lost that weight during this call. Yeah. And I'm proud of you for it, John. Tim, what was it like re watching a show? Was it as you remembered it? Like I said, chance is right. Most of the heroic characters are not very likable in this show.
So when I was watching it, I was watching it more from this adults perspective, trying to solve these puzzles that had bothered me for the last 40 years. Like who is Willie DeWitt? Is he named after a person from our hometown? What are the chances of that? It's not possible, right? But I still don't have answers. So until the day where I meet Larry Hama, I don't know if I ever will. Maybe that's a new life goal. Maybe I need to meet Larry Hama to ask him. I just feel like that's probably easy, like with the Internet you could probably just tweet or X him or whatever.
Oh well, the guy who showed up without any AI plans. It's telling me how easy it is to get a hold of. He was too busy looking at pictures from 1991. It was a magical year for Halloween costume. All right. Should we kick it over to closing? Yeah, I mean, first, before we do, I have one more quote from the movie. The toads are changing the weather on these planets to make them more toad habitable, and there's this line that they've turned Warren into a sticky, icky grangy mangy swamp. I think that speaks a rinse off.
Can we talk about how unkind they are in their words towards toads? They'll call them things like tadpoles or fly sucking, slimy croaking piece of toad. Wow, that last one is bad. Hurtful. Even. Yeah. I mean, I think it's a little bit justified when they're trying to take over the entire universe. No one's ever called you a chicken eating pasty piece of human. Wow. Wow, I feel like chicken is kind of an insult actually. Vega Chicken Eater. Yeah. Chicken nugget. All right? I mean, chances talk pretty openly that he loves this show.
It's true. I do. Talk about that in closing, or tell us what your rating would be. This is probably going to be a two. There are worse things you could spend your time watching. Aren't that many worst things, you know? It's pretty egregious. That being said, there are parts that I had fun with and that's good enough for A2I. Promised that this was the most approachable episode for newcomers. So chance of scale is a scale of -5 to +5, and low numbers like 1 or -1 are actually the worst scores you can get a 0.
Is closer to middle the worse it is. Yeah, A -, 5 is terrible movie, but in the best ways. A + 5 is just an amazing movie. So if you were to watch a -5 movie, it would be bad, but you would have a great time. So a 2 is a passable experience. It's not a good experience, but. It could be worse. Yeah, it could be worse. Anything else you want to say there chance? If there is anyone thing like this, seems like fun, maybe I should watch this show. I would invite you to watch the theme song and nothing else.
You will leave happy. Wow, trying to keep people away from my father's nostalgia. That's right, I'm hoarding it. If everyone gets into Bucky O'Hare, then Tim isn't interesting. That's right. Oh, what? A2 TV show? All right, John, what do you want to say about this show? Yeah, it's interesting that you make the comparison to Silverhawks. Both shows for me, because they were so important to you. I was just kind of born into really being into them. We didn't have channels on our TV that let us watch these kind of things, so we relied on owning one VHS.
You'd rent the other VHS's because each VHS has like 2 episodes on it or whatever, so you'd eventually get to watch all the episodes and just because we had all the toys. It was a big part of my childhood so I am completely blind with nostalgia. Oh wow. Yeah, I'd be OK to watch the rest of the episodes. I'm sure that if I watch a show from the early 90s that was this quality, but not Bucky O'Hare, and I hadn't seen it before, I probably wouldn't want to watch more than an episode. But because it's Bucky O'Hare, I'm like, give it to me.
Well, I think. That it's got some interesting adult undertones as well, like racism. Like Racism Center. Yeah, no, I. Was over tone. Like there's bureaucracy too. Bucky O'Hare wants to fight back against the toads, but all of the leadership of the Free Peoples are like that. Money needs to go to other things. We can't afford to build warships. Prove to us that the toads are a threat. So it's Bucky O'Hare. Versus the forces of low income military, we're not willing to build more of what you need.
I just find it interesting. I don't think I know of any other kids cartoon that tried to rile us up against politicians. Like give Bucky more weapons, Captain. Planet. No, the opposite Captain Planet. They don't like war. Bucky's like, I want to go to war and as kids were like. Yeah, you need to draft the people of Warren.
All right, Jon, did you want to add anything other than Blinded by Nostalgia? I do think that for a concept that was made in the 70s, it is pretty impressive. Regardless of however the show executed it, the concept of the characters, how they look, and the world that was created is a really cool one. I'm a huge fan and Toad Borg is just the flippin coolest bad guy ever. Like when he shows up and just beats them all up I'm like yes because I feel like in 90s shows the villains are never really that strong.
Yeah, we love a good bad guy win. Yeah, And so when you actually fear the bad guy and you're like, how on earth could the good guys ever beat him? That was a cool memory I had of Toad Borg as a kid. That's why we had to break our toad Borg's thumb off. Yeah, so that they'd. Have too powerful. My turn. Sure, go for it. When we were first watching this show, I thought that the version that we were watching had some like really weird commercial breaks. But the longer I watched the show, the more I realized the pacing is real bad.
They go from one thing to another in no time at all. I have a scene here that I wrote down because of how bad it felt. They land down on Warren and it's a swamp now and they're like, it's almost like they've used some kind of climate changing technology. Hey look, it's an audio. Recording. We just set up the climate changing technology and we are leaving now. OK, why was that something that needed to be? There. Yes, this movie moves at a breakneck pace. All in all, not great. I would fix the pacing and fix the characters.
Just make them interesting. I think that those two are mandatory. It's a new season, would you like to go back? Up with a new. Go back to cook. So my cookie is cookie trap. Wallpaper return of the cookie. My cookie is cookie trap wallpaper, just so you know. I don't know what that means. I had thought this up before you asked me by oh, there is an advertisement where they are selling flytrap wallpaper so that the flies get stuck to your wall and you can snack on them. So when the cookie monster, when the cookies are flying around your house, they'll get stuck on the walls and then you can eat the cookies off the walls.
Oh, you're chopping the cookies on the wall? Yeah. I thought you were baiting people with the cookies. OK. I've not understood a single thing with three set. Well, I love that we brought cookies back. I'm here. For it. You're welcome. This is the most approachable episode and nobody knows what I just said. Including, can you explain the metaphor of the cookies sticking to the? Fact that when I said it was a DVD, it's not edible, therefore it's a DVD. Yeah. So it's a trap. The show is a trap. It pulls you in like an angler fish and then it eats you.
So in the same way that a cookie gets stuck to the wall and then it gets eaten, we are the cookie in this case. For me I agree with what John said, this whole concept was really far ahead of its time and the show gets weird. They team up with an octopus spy you guys didn't see but dog stars Gunner like Deadeye is a bumblebee that has a gun for a Stinger. And it was. Really impractical. How would you use that? You can't face the people that you're shooting. And I just think like, what's the rules for animal this world?
I What's the? Deal. Man, it's all super weird you. Born with a gun in your. Finger but like I said, I'm here for the I got it medically removed. Why I think that those are the things that interest me most about cartoons as an adult, people who took weird chances. I thank you, Larry Hama, if you ever listen to this podcast. Which we know that you. Are. Yeah, yeah. What if our regular listeners Larry Hama. We know he's tuned into Grand Prairie in the surrounding area, so. That's right. That's what I was gonna say is when you get a chance, please e-mail us at [email protected] and let us know how big of a fan you are of the Grand Prairie boxer Willie DeWitt.
This show does tackle weird politics. I cannot honestly recommend it to anyone, but I still can you. Recommend it to your future self. Future self would watch this over another lamb before time, any day of the week. Well, that wasn't part of the question. Well, that's who John is. Gaslit future self into watching SO. You're both to the same day. Watch Lamb before time. No, no, no, please watch Bucky O'Hare. Speaking of future episodes, our next episode that we're coming back with for people who want to watch and TuneIn alongside us is D2, The Mighty Ducks sequel.
Yep. Does anybody have any spoilers that they want to talk about before we rewatch that movie? Spoiler I'm not excited. Have you ever watched? You have forced me to watch something Mighty Ducks related. OK, I remember one day I made Chance watch the Mighty Ducks movies and he actually really enjoyed them and so we ended up watching all of them. What do you remember Chance? Almost. Nothing, if I'm being honest. If I remember correctly, it's like, oh, it's a sports team, but these are like the worst sports team people.
It's an underdog, an underdog. That's like the thing that you do on a Swing set when you run underneath. It that is what that is called. That is actually what that is called. Wow. Yes, and if everyone noticed, it is another sequel movie. We grew up with Mighty Ducks 2, not Mighty Ducks one. Yes, and we'll get more into it on our next episode. I watched all of those movies many times, but as John mentioned, our parents only ever bought the second movie which. If her number is better, obviously, why would you buy the movie?
With all movies only go up in quality. Yeah, I'll tell you, buy. The movie without a #1 when you could buy one with the number on it, it's just a bonus. You can find it on Disney Plus. Oh yes, they tried to do a TV show on Disney Plus. As a reminder to everyone before we close as well, please look for the poll either in the description in the comments or attached to this episode wherever you tune in. And I have a dark confession to make everyone I've been. Did we get to guess what it is? OK, fine.
Guess what it is. There's zero percent chance you guess what it is. It has something to do with one of our callbacks. Is it a reveal that you lied about a callback being in a movie? So after all this time I was looking through some old footage to put in a TikTok and I was watching the first episode of the Odyssey. Oh no, it's not even lookout for weirdos, is it? It's not. What is it? It's a watch, weirdos. It's. What? Watch out for weirdos. So that's so funny, honestly. Our callback that started it all.
All of our callbacks are built on the lookout for weirdos. And this is how we end every episode of the show. And it's incorrect. That's so funny, the. Fact we have ever said is wrong. So I think we just lean into it and we keep saying lookout for Weirdos. It rolls out a lot. Yes, you have been living a lot, so sorry to burst people's bubbles. But, you know, if it makes it any better, we made-up lookout for Weirdos we just didn't realize at the time. Tim, sometimes you just have to accept that reality is reality.
Reality is reality. You're taking those nicotine colored goggles off. All right, Anything anybody wants to say in closing, don't. Forget to breathe. Braised Beethoven out. Grandma. Something something the sun is shining, but the ice is slippery. Hey, you got it. I think that might be the first time I've ever said that fully. We're going to make reality is reality. A reoccurring thing I. Don't think we plan it. I think it's organic. Yeah, I think reality is reality is going to come back guaranteed, but we don't know if it's going to be a call back.
This doesn't sound like podcast talk anymore. This sounds like shock talk. This sounds like, you know, it does sound like podcast talk, Logan. All right, Are we ending this thing? This is the most approachable. This is psychotic. I just want to point out the fact that we have every episode ends with about two minutes of just referencing previous episodes. Is so approachable. Yeah, the fact that we devolve as. Soon, as we say. Before this is gonna end. And we all love referential humor, as we all know.
We all know we love that stuff. Yeah, so it makes sense. Oh, you want to vote for us to watch Spy Hard again? Too bad I'm already re watching it every night before bed. Joke's on you. All right. I guess that's it. Thanks for listening. Thanks for listening.
