Bullied Nostalgia: 50th Episode Celebration with Saturday Morning Cartoons
Game plan
Beating all odds, the Bullied Nostalgia podcast has lasted 50 episodes. To celebrate: Chance, Jon, Ky & Tim sat down and watched Saturday morning cartoons together.
Join us for a conversation about Sonic The Hedgehog, Captain Planet and Eels on steroids... And yes, of course there are commercials for optometrist arcades and mall demons.
So many of our favors to watch. Well, look, now they're being. Bashed. I guess that's what we should expect. On the Bullied Nostalgia Podcast, Hello to everyone on the Internet. This is the Bullied Nostalgia Podcast, the podcast no one has ever heard of that somehow hit 50 episodes. That's right. Today's episode, we are going to be talking about some cartoons we watch together, but we'll also be talking about the podcast as a whole and looking back a little bit on the experience that we've had over the last four years.
As mentioned, we wanted to do something different to celebrate this milestone, so we bought several hours of Saturday morning cartoons on VHS and watched them together. But who is we and what is the Bullied Nostalgia Podcast? Well, if you're asking those questions, I don't know how you found this episode, but welcome. I'm Timothy Nesbitt and I'm joined by my brother Jonathan. Looking great at 50. Looking great at 50 and my two kids. Chance. That's me. And Kai. Hi. Gross and together we rewatch old movies and TV shows from our youth and see if they hold up as adults.
50 episodes you guys, that is wild. It's like more episodes than Stranger Things. No. Why are people not talking about us like they're talking about Stranger Things? Do you think people have conspiracy theories about our podcast? Isn't the 50th episode and we're lying to you? So statistically half of all podcasts don't make it to their third episode. So. This is what they would call sad
we haven't gained. One new listener since 25 but we're still going. 90% of all podcasts quit before they reached their 50th episode, so we are a rare breed. We fall into less than 10% of podcasts that are still going at 50 episodes. What do you guys think sets us apart? Foolishness. Amateurish capabilities. The T-shirts that we won't stop making. All right, you Downers. I think it's because we enjoy each other so much. We're having so much fun. And our fearless leader Tim keeps us going. He. Keeps dragging us back.
For another episode, I don't feel dragged. I delightfully prance into the next episode. That might also be because a lot of this is my. Yeah. Dancing kind of have to keep suffering. I don't know what I'll do if I have to watch one more Land Before Time movie. I have to watch them by myself. It's bad, you guys. Look, if I appear on the news, it's not my fault. It's John's fault. If you end up on the news. Yeah, for whatever happens after I watch the next Land Before Time movie. What would that have to be to be on the news?
I don't know. Really big. Pomegranate. OK, context you guys.
So we were playing a board game over Christmas. I won't go into detail on what the game is, but essentially you have to get people to guess how likely something is. And so the whole point of the question was that something had to end up on the news. And John's answer was a pomegranate the size of a basketball, it was supposed. To be 80% likely. No, I don't think that'd be an 8. You were up at the top, John. It was. Yeah, you put it, man. You can't back out now. Well. That wouldn't make international news, but that would be front page on.
That is true. OK, yes, nostalgia definitely hits different after 50. We have a few episodes left in this season, but if anyone wants to give us feedback or ideas that will affect the future of this podcast or even just let us know where you're at, you can send an e-mail to [email protected]. We also have a merch store that you can find by searching Bulliedpod on redbubble.com and I recently added a mug that Kai requested that says World's Best Mug. I want that mug. You're searching it right now.
Do you drink things out of mugs, Kai? Nope, I genuinely couldn't tell you the last time I did. He's been saving himself for the world's best one. Yeah. Tim whenever I go into red bubble and type bullied nostalgia, it gives me T-shirts with rustic steam engine trains. Just write bullied pod one word. OK, well if you put bullied space nostalgia, you get these rustic trained T-shirts. I'm curious. I'm looking this up. Oh, my goodness, Kai, you work my time aggressively. Yeah, we can hear your keystrokes.
Kai. John, I look you up. Yeah. There's six bullied nostalgia shirts and then one steam engine and then. There's 4 steam engine shirts. Tim, do you have like a steam engine side hustling? Well, I'm not going to tell you about it on this episode, that's for sure. Wait for the Thomas the Train Engine episode. Oh my goodness, Thomas the Train would be such a boring episode. Oh, I think we have to do it. That shows the worst. Grandma used to record that for us, right? I know she just, it's kind of British, isn't?
Yeah, bless her heart. She was like, oh, they'll like this. And it's like, no. I'm laughing thinking about making fun of that. John, did you see Bullet Train? No, no I didn't. Chance loves that movie and there is a lot of Thomas references in that movie. It's a good one. I do love that movie. I watched it just recently again actually. So last year in one of our episodes when I got Spotify Wrapped, I mentioned that it felt like our podcast growth had stalled, but the stats said otherwise. Well, it's that time of the year that Spotify Wrapped is out again, and it has a lot to say.
Once again, these are just Spotify statistics. This does not reflect how we're doing on iheart or on Apple or any of the other dozen places where a podcast can be found. But some fun statistics are in the year 2025, we've had a 58% increase in audience. We've had a 999% increase in new audience, a 22% increase in followers and a 42% increase in listening time from the previous year. That's a lot of positive metrics. 2 positive. Hi. Why are you going to be doubting? What was that? What was that? Hi, why are you going to be doubting?
Sometimes the mouth and the brain.
Someone calling him Sean. Why? You got to be having a stroke. The top countries that listen to our podcast #1 is Canada #2 is the US of a #3 is the UK #4 is Ukraine and #5 is Spain. Fans listen to our podcast 78% longer than other podcasts. Is that 'cause we make longer podcasts? No. I. Infected you because I haven't downloaded any other podcasts on mom's phone. Can you imagine? Mom is listening? That's funny. Nana, do you like our podcast? So some other fun just statistics stuff is that. Struggling to talk today.
We had a poll up that let people vote for their favorite episode of our podcast. It was a head to head format so essentially 2 episodes would pop up and you'd pick your favorite between the two. Keep in mind the newest episodes were not included in the poll. We had a total of 2967 votes cast. Wow, how many votes was per person? I remember doing a lot of votes. There were fifty in a run. OK, so divide that number by 50 chance. Kai really wants to get down to the brass tacks, are you? Here. What are you doing over there?
I don't know you. Said we're Nana. Do you like our podcast and then what's happening with you? What did your keyboard sound like again?
So. I have mic monitoring on all the time but I can't have it on right now because it cuts off my yelling. Yelling is very important for your audio. It is. So Tim, I want to hear about this face off and now land before time was #1. OK, I'm just gonna read out the top ones in order of favorite episodes. In first place, we have 3 ninjas. Nice. In second place, Double Dragon. Eric is at the top. That's true. In 3rd place descendants in fourth place land before time 50. Yeah, in 5th place, Descendants 2.
In 6th place, The Nutcracker Prince. Interesting. In 7th place Dougal. Wrong. Wrong that. Episode was really fun to. Me, yeah, it just. Wasn't fun to watch. The movie sucks, but it's a good episode. In 8th place, Quest for Camelot. In 9th place, Ninja Turtles 2, The Secret of the Use, which reaffirms that people like me saying please please, a moment to reflect. They would if you ever said that you had a phone recording directly into the mic. And in 10th place, Spaceballs. And I've noticed a little bit of a pattern.
All of our talk episodes are either really funny guests or bullying chants specifically. Well, we bullied John in Nutcracker. That's fair. I find it hard to believe that only one land before a Time movie made it in the top 20. Nope.
Something that I did find interesting about this rating. If you look at the top ten, season one has three episodes represented. Season 2 has three episodes represented. Season 3 has three episodes represented. Season 4, at the time of this poll, only had one episode represented. But that seems to imply that there's a consistent level of quality season to season, which I think is a really cool realization. Or we can never break our barrier of only having three good episodes. That's right, only three good ones per season.
Where the heck was Ernest scared?
Like clearly I needed to do. This. Quiz. Multiple times it's true, our listeners got it wrong. What is Ernest? Not. The top 20. Not like was it season 4? No, it was season 3 and John is the only one who loved that episode. Don't let him rewrite history, hey? Wasn't it? It had like the milk, no? Not a really good episode. I'll have to trust your word for it because I honestly don't. Remember chances like half asleep and not putting up with this BS. Something else that I thought would be fun to look back at is to see which of the movies and TV shows that we have looked at on our podcast have been the highest rated and lowest rated movies in the world.
So using Rotten Tomatoes scores, I've pulled a list of the worst rated movies that we've done on this podcast, keeping in mind that a lot of the things that we've done on the podcast do not have Rotten Tomatoes scores. For instance, the majority of the Land Before Time sequels are not on Rotten Tomatoes. So the fifth worst rated movie that we have done on Rotten Tomatoes is Ace Ventura 2 which has a 23%. Number 4 is Superman 4 with 16%. Does anyone want to venture a guess at what the first three spots are for worst movies that we've done on this podcast?
Doogle Listen on Rotten Tomatoes. Google's definitely up there. Doogle is number 2 with 9%. Google is a cult following for being so terrible. That's right. No, it's on. There, I'm actually going to fill in the gap in between. I'm going to tell you guys, number 3 is Double Dragon with 12%. What do you guys think is the worst movie that we have done on this podcast with 7% on Rotten Tomatoes has to? Appeal to nobody. I think one time too is in the selection people thought. They were going to be good.
You fools, it's Christmas in Wonderland, am I right? Well, it could be the. Answer is spy hard. Yeah, I see that. What? That's a classic.
It's so funny hearing that. It's my hard knowing that movie just got a sequel. Well, it didn't. The new movie was the Naked Gun sequels, which Spy Hard was trying to cash in on. John, how do you feel about mobilizing your bots and all your loved ones to force that episode onto our podcast now knowing it is worse than Dougal on Rotten Tomatoes? I forgot that that was the one we voted for. I just figured we all wanted to watch. All wanted it so bad. Watch Speed Razor, I like that movie. We voted for.
You meant you voted for. He meant we as in him and the. Conglomerate of bots who share his consciousness. I was told I was allowed to vote once. I voted once. I borrowed my dad's phone and voted once with his. I borrowed my wife's phone and voted once with hers. Anyone who would have voted for Spy Heart, it's so consensually with their own knowledge of it. Once again a reminder, John, 7% of people on Earth like that movie. No 7% of 2020 critics detached from what real humans want? Sure, sure. Can you check the audience score?
Look it up, you got the keyboard, it's your job now I'm looking. It up and bounce it to the. World, it's 31%. That is correct. Wow that's shocking. How many bots did you use for that? Yeah. OK, so these are less fun than the worst episodes, but looking at the five best reviewed movies that we've done on this podcast coming in #5 with an 80% is goldeneye #4 with 88 percent is Spaceballs. Does anyone want to venture a guess at what the top three best reviewed movies are that we've done on this podcast?
Humanji up there. Nope. No, Jumanji was like a 50 we talked about it on. There it was like a 60 some. Right. I feel like I remember witches being rated pretty high. That is correct. Witches is the number one highest reviewed film we have done on this podcast with a 94%. That feels really good. I know Dad's getting ready to the joke, so I'm just going to say is one of them descendants? Descendants is #3 at 90%. I knew it would be. And John's over there laughing. But follow that bird is number 2 at 92%.
Oh, that's not right. Laughing anymore? It's. A good movie. I did want to share the top reviewed 5 because they are less fun than the worst reviewed, but I knew it was an opportunity to grief both of you which I had to take. I'm happy. So which is weird in this podcast. Yeah, Kai, you can turn off your yell function.
So we still haven't even talked about this Saturday morning. Saturday morning. I think about Saturday morning. Yeah, my brain just shut off for a second. Yeah. So we're going to chat about that stuff right away. I just thought one more thing that I would tell us about this kind of fun. We've joked a little bit about how in this podcast we sometimes inadvertently land on something that is going to become famous or re famous after we tackle it on the podcast. So there are five things that have projects in the works right away will be coming out soon that maybe just maybe Hollywood can thank our podcast for in the end of this year.
In 2026 we will have another Jumanji movie. You can't take claim for that one. I think they were on the fence if they were going to follow it up with a sequel and then we just kind of pushed them over there. Well, hold on, these four guys from Canada. Doing the same I think. We have to do. Now one living in sex myth. Do you know how competitive the podcast market is there there's. Three people, I think. There is also another Ninja Turtles movie coming out in 2027, There is a sequel to Spaceballs coming out in 2027.
The next Descendants movie Wicked Wonderland will be out later this year. And lastly in 2025 Funko Pops announced pre-orders for a line of Land Before Time bobbleheads. John what? Funko Pop going. Under that is also true, so we'll see if those actually. Funko pops going under. Lots of people buy Funko Pops. Unfortunately, every store stocks millions of Funko Pops. They feel like they've made far too many obscure characters. They should have started with Land Before Time, obviously. OK, well that was my fun look back at the last 49 episodes.
It's one of those things where Gosh kind of made a joke that he didn't think we were going to make it past three episodes, but legitimately it didn't look like we were going to make it past four. Like I think the 4th episode was Batman and then the fifth one chance Kai and I recorded Fast and the Furious 35 without John and that. Was a beautiful experience that. Was a bad experience and it was like, OK, well it was a fun run while I last did so. Kai was joking, but really it was pretty accurate.
It blows my mind to think that we have 50 episodes at this point. So I guess I want to say thank you to you 3 for putting up with me and this podcast for that long. And to our listeners who have tuned in for that many episodes or skipped some of them. You know what I mean? Tuned in for most. It blows my mind that we're still growing. Spotify Rapped has said that essentially as many people as were listening to us last year, that many new people found us again this year. Obviously not nearly that many stuck around, but that means that we're still growing.
And who knows, if we do another 50 episodes, maybe we'll have more than 10 listeners to say. Yeah, I want to take this moment to acknowledge Tim. Tim, you are the one who started this. You're the one who records, edits, posts every episode. And makes our T-shirts. As. Much as you tried to recruit me, I have not participated. So. You heard us cats together. You even bought AVCR and AVHS for the episode we're recording right now. This podcast exists because of you. It's your intentionality that's created so many of these fun connections and memories.
So thank you, Tim. Thanks, John. Yeah, I don't think I would have wanted the job of editing all this down. I can get through it once and that's the recording. Yeah, I have to listen to each of these like 4 times and then he chooses to listen to them again once he's uploaded them. Well, that's for the metrics.
Yeah. We. Need those. Kylin, I feel like you get a behind the scenes look that chance and I don't. Anything else you want to share about what your dad gets up to over there? It is very odd he put so much time into editing them and then he immediately listens to them physically. You can force me to do. Next level. Thanks, Tim. You're welcome. I guess I don't know, sounds pretty painful for chance I'm. Glad you do it. Podcast for me has been a way that we continue to connect even though we live in different places and I've shared this a handful of times but still to this day my wife knows when the new podcast drops because she hears me laughing in the other room.
Also thank you Chancing Chi for your patience. Has got 100 more movies for my childhood or more. We're never watching Speed Racer, are we? Never watching clutch powers. You can put it up for a vote, but spy hard. 2 might win up the nonexistent movie we just watched. Spy Hard again to watch. We're going to get to recording and be like, wait a second, this. Is just spy hard 2 inspired 1 again? I do really appreciate that it is a way that we get to still spend time together, even distance. By having a reason to come together, it means that we're making time for each other.
If people are looking for a secret sauce or a secret reason why we still do it, I think at the end of the day, that is really it is. It's an excuse for me to hang out with you guys. OK, so let's talk about some we get. To talk about the mall clown, we. Do get to talk about the mall clown. That's right. So to catch up listeners on what we did, as John inferred, I bought a VHS tape that was essentially a recorded block of Saturday morning cartoons. And then when the VCR that I had didn't work, I meant I also had to buy a VCR.
But we got together and we watched some cartoons. There were some funny commercials and stuff that Kai definitely wants to talk about. But essentially the shows that came on were King Arthur and the Knights of Justice, Captain Planet, Sonic the Hedgehog, Free Willy. Sonic the Hedgehog. And reboot. Is that what we want to do? Do we want to like go in order or what do you guys want to talk about? Some of these I want to talk about. More than others. So I just say whatever we fancy. Maybe I don't know if this helps, but to just even say what are Saturday morning cartoons in the world of streaming and the previously cable TV?
Like what is a Saturday morning cartoon? Sure. So back in the day. Back in a lot. Yeah, when we had to walk uphill both ways, the block of cartoons that networks purchased were relegated to Saturday mornings when kids didn't have school. It would be a long standing habitual viewing experience for kids to wake up first thing in the morning on Saturday and TuneIn and watch their cartoons. Overtime networks would develop that would do cartoons all the time, like Cartoon Network or Teletune. And a lot of these big networks also owned those or would see that they would be moving all the cartoons to be watchable at any time of day.
And so they would eventually dissolve Saturday morning cartoons and replace it with sports. So it's something that's been gone now for quite some time. Chance and Kai, I honestly don't even know if you guys were alive when Saturday morning cartoons were a thing. But for the longest time, that was your cartoon block. And you knew that if you woke up on a Saturday morning, you could catch all the best shows or several good shows, then have to watch Littlest Hobo and then more good shows after. So in this case, we got some shows that we were very familiar with and some shows that we weren't as familiar with.
I don't think any of us had seen King Arthur and the Knights of Justice before. It was a bunch of football players that time traveled back to the Knights of the Round and they became King Arthur and all those famous Knights. And I mean, I have no nostalgia for this show, so I don't have a lot to talk about. Does anybody have anything that they want to say? It was weird up with Merlin. Was he just regular Merlin? I just thought it was really funny that it was just like. Oh yeah? What's up, dude bro?
Merlin dude bro. Merlin. Oh yeah. Yeah, I would need dog poop moments just out of nowhere. And he was like, Merlin, don't kiss me on the cheek. What? Nobody was talking about kissing you on the cheek. You just decided that that what was happening. The other episode of TV that I really have nothing that I want to talk about is tragically reboot, because coincidentally the. Exact same episode. I'm so infuriated by that. When we did an episode based on reboot three years ago now, John picked an episode where they turned the graphics down to be really bad.
I said in that episode I would never watch that again, and lo and behold, we get one episode on this VHS tape and it's that terrible episode. Not only that, that is the final thing we get to watch that day. That is true. We just. Have to sit through it for no point. When it said Next up reboot I was like oh wouldn't it be funny if it was that stupid one we watched before? And of course, it had to be all right, John. You referenced it in an episode earlier this season. Tell us about the Free Willy cartoon.
So earlier in the season we recorded Free Willy Show about an orca slash killer whale and it's good friend. What's Willy's human friend's name? Is it Jesse so? The only difference between the live action movie and the cartoon is that Jesse can telepathically communicate with animals. And also there's like robots and stuff, so. No, no, no, the only. Difference. Yeah, I seem to remember there being cyborgs in the original movies. But anyways, this episode we got to meet a giant eel. That was like irradiated by a meteor or something or other radioactive chemicals.
So just like in the movie. We see this in another show that we watched but trying to get some environmental messages into kids programming. What show was that? It might have something to do with Captain Planet. He's a hero. Gonna take pollution down to 0. Anyways, so this episode was about this giant Yale, who was unfortunately made big by. You got the big kind of pollution, which is really sad to see. You hate to see a big eel that got the big juice. The. Big juice. You mean I could be. Never mind.
OK, moving up. Are you gonna? Say. No, I thought, I thought you were promoting steroids for a second. Maybe I could have muscles, too. That's all I got on Free Willy. Michael Jackson didn't even make an appearance. Which is so sad because he played the orca in the other movie so. You imagine the first movie was inhumane, They couldn't get an orca, so every time Jessie's just riding on Michael Jacksons back.
Willie Smoke opens up and at the back you can see Michaels.
Can you imagine? Here's a voice on the whale.
So John already mentioned we got Captain Planet a hero. He's a hero. Captain Planet was gonna make an appearance on this podcast at some point. 100% that was gonna happen. So we got it out of the way here and we had an episode where the kids fly around the world and kidnap animals. Chance and Kai. Had you guys ever seen Captain Planet before? I had not I'm. Sure I have, baby. It's perpetuated media so much that I've just threw osmosis. Simply seen an episode. Sure there. Is a set of characters from different regions that are supposed to be, well, that a person from wherever would identify with.
But it was really strange because the guy who was the American Wheeler, his character was just that he was really annoying. He was like the magic school bus. What's the guy's name? The kid. Yeah, it's funny that you should say that because you can pull up some memes. Each of the Planeteers has a member of the Magic School Bus that looks exactly like a younger version of them. So the main cast of the Magic School Bus is the same cast as in Captain Planet. Yeah. I'm looking at fan theories that Magic School Bus and Captain Planet have a shared universe.
Captain Planet is actually the bus. Which villain does Miss Frizzle become? Is she not Gaia? God of the Universe. Nice try, She's that. Sorry God of anti pollution propaganda. Thank you. So for those who aren't familiar, Captain Planet is about Mother Earth gathering a kid from each continent giving them a power ring with some kind of elemental power. When they combine all their they create a superhero called Captain Planet whose blue skinned with green hair and they go and stop pollution and environmental haters.
Bye, guys. So Captain Planet is meant to be an avatar of the Earth, and the Earth is covered by mostly water, which is presumably what his skin is supposed to be. But that's why enemies or bad guys can hurt Captain Planet with pollution. They are leveraging the strength of the the Earth, but the Earth is fragile as well. And so all of its propaganda that's meant to teach kids that the Earth needs us as much as we need it, when Captain Planet will come to their aid and help them when they need it, Sometimes he needs them too.
And then also sometimes the episode's just about kidnapping animals. That guy in that one, wasn't he making plastic water bottles? How dare he? I'm imagining Adam West Batman where everything's like pow bam and whatever and it's just Captain Planet fighting a billowing thing of smoke. Back and forth that vlog he does say in this episode, just call me an old blowhard, no? I won't. No, I won't. I refuse. Tom Cruise was the original voice for Captain Planet, but he dropped out after six episodes they rerecorded.
This episode felt weird because the objective of the episode was never met. Yeah, like we need to get all these animals back to their natural locations, and then they didn't do that. I can't imagine that we're going to come back to Captain Planet in a future episode, so I just thought I'd share this funny anecdote. I watched the Captain Planet episode a couple years back and it's about this guy who's illiterate and one of the bad guys tricks him into pesticide all over the crops. He's got a whole warehouse full of toxic waste and they say poisonous with a skull and crossbones on them.
But he takes a sticker of a happy apple and he sticks it over the skull and crossbones so it says poison with this happy apple. Later on the sticker comes off and he's like Oh no it's poisonous. Supposed to give you this messaging at the end like learn how to read, stay in school, don't be an idiot who pours chemicals on trees. But the bad guy could have put a sticker over the word poisonous too, like.
The real problem is happy apples. The real problem is that bad guy didn't have a printer that was big enough to cover up the lettering too I guess. Remember, kids never trust labels. The toys for Captain Planet I guess had to be manufactured using recycled and Earth friendly materials. Oh, I did not even consider that. That's pretty cool, actually. Yeah. In a world where micro plastics are going to kill all of us, it's nice to know that at. Least the captain. Planet Toys didn't kill us. None of you eat them all.
If you eat the toys, those are macro plastics, not macro plastics. And the last cartoon that we watched was Sonic the Hedgehog. Sonic the Hedgehog. Has a kicking theme song, although in retrospect is not nearly as cool as I remembered it. I don't know if you guys felt the same way, but in my head cannon it was like a rock ballad. I knew all the words to the song, but listening to it is kind of folky. Like. Someone on a banjo while this song is playing. Not nearly as cool as my 8 year old brain has told me that it was.
But it is a good reminder that he's the fastest thing alive. I never seen this episode, it was about other Dragons in the world. Yeah, I was glad that I had never seen this. Before had you seen any episodes, Kai? I'd seen the episodes of the other Sonic TV show that came out around the same time. I'd not seen any of this show. OK, yeah, this one. I'm sure that this show has some better episodes, but boy am I wishing I saw the other Sonic show you wish. Really. You like the other Sonic show more?
I prefer the idea of the other Sonic show over that stupid dragon. Oh. Chili dogs. Hey kids, remember, don't do drugs. Chili dogs. I did not enjoy anything related to that stupid dragon. It was that. So for our listeners in the early 90s, Mario ruled the world. There were statistics that Mario was more recognizable to Kids Christ than Jesus or Mickey Mouse. He was everywhere. And so when Sega started trying to take over the market, they wanted to flood it with images of Sonic the Hedgehog. Which means that they let 2 rival cartoon companies make completely different cartoons at the same time just in an effort to see what stuck.
One of them was a very goofy slapstick show and the other one was a very dark post apocalyptic one. The post apocalyptic 1 was the one that John and I grew up with and the one that we watched the episode of recently. The content of this one was weird. It was about finding Dragons out in the world and the dragon character of the cast is very annoying on a good day. So certainly not one of the better episodes, but but I would take this show over the other show any day of the week. You don't like scratching grounder?
I don't have issues with specific bad guys. I don't like Doctor Robotnik or Doctor Robotnik's mom. I do have an issue with Doctor Robotnik's mom, yes. What personal grievances? You wouldn't hear me saying that behind her back. She listens to the podcast, she'll hear it. I think there was an episode of the other Sonic the Hedgehog show where they kidnapped Sonic the Hedgehog and whenever Child Protective Services would show up they would make the prison look like a bedroom and I'm getting flashbacks to that right now.
Yeah, Sonic the Hedgehog was really weird early on because all they knew was they had a video game about a blue thing that ran fast. In the original Sonic Bible, Robotnik was his dad and all kinds of weird messiness Sonic went to. Drum circles and hung out with moms who knit. Yeah. That's straight from the Sonic Bible. That is true. Also, Robotnik was used with an egg and that's why he's Doctor Eggman. Also true. John, do you have any feelings about the Sonic episode we watched? It just got me excited about Sonics groupies.
I hadn't seen them in a really long time. Yeah, actually, our readers would not know this, but growing up my dad would often get us the old Archie Sonic cartoons. And so I grew up with those for a long time. And so it was cool to. See characters. The Acorn. Acorn. The big seal whose name's Elude. Roder, Roboni. Roboni. Antoine, who was I think my favorite character. Yeah, it was cool to see them. I like shows will come out like Sonic Boom which do really well, but they kind of stick to the troop of Sonic Knuckles Amy, so it was cool to see them again.
Did anybody want to talk about the stuff that we watched that wasn't a cartoon? Yes, I do. The first. Ad I want to talk about was this thing called Auction 95. With a name like that, you would assume it's an auction in the year 1995. I say you would assume because we still don't know what it is. The advertisement itself was people running on the beach, nonsensical video footage. You could have told me that those were ads for anything. Yeah, our advertisements were made for locals, so we would get things like kids specs, which we didn't exist.
It is not on the Internet. Kids specs sounds like the coolest thing ever went out of business and I could tell you nothing else about it. Well, any place where you can get your eyewear, your glasses, but also it's got a carnival and stuff. It's. An arcade. Coolest idea ever. Because optometrist. Anything mixed with an arcade is better. Sorry to all of our optometrist listeners. I didn't mean about the people, I meant the building. Our viewership goes down to 0. Turns out all along all of our listeners were optometrists.
Oh, the Eggo ad. There is an ad where this kid really wants to get an Eggo waffle. So what he does is he rotates A skyscraper 45° so that the Eggo waffle will fall out of a window. I just miss old commercials. I think they were just so random and over the top. We had commercials for Polly Pocket. It was Polly Pocket for Barbie. At the Lifesavers Gummies commercial. That one was a. There's a. Commercial for cereal, in which an old lady got really close to the camera and it just felt so. 90s in the 90s they were trying to make a commercial look cool.
They'd zoom up to an old person's nostrils. That was just a thing they. Did that's what cool people do? 1 ticket to Elmo please.
Great call back. Great call back. Respect. Good. Thank you. Thank you. It also invites me of back when we used to have to watch commercials, you'd watch the same commercials over and over and over again in a short period of time. I've got on here. It just says make the right choice. And I feel like that was probably around 40% of the commercials don't do this thing. I don't know John, I feel like you could experience another viewing session where you just watch the same commercials over and over again by maybe trying to watch a video online that just tells you about the same Walmart gum commercial.
Oh my goodness. That was the chipmunk adventure, I think. Yeah, if you watch it in the website the daily. Chanted on an ad blocker so he was safe. We weren't. Yeah, I watched it on Internet Archive. Kylin, you made reference to kids shouldn't do yes, accuracy. Is fear mongering. If you have too many cigarettes, you'll get all cold and then your head will explode. One of the ads we got beep for beep, we talked about the mall demon. We have to. We kept getting this ad for the Mill Creek Mall in which it would show you the shots of the mall and tell you about the mall and then a gesture would sneak on.
Screen he would materialize next to your son's bed while a child is. Asleep. I'm gonna go out on a limb and say Stephen King, base Pennywise the Clown on the Mill Creek demon. Yeah, you know on YouTube now for people to find old lost footage. So please, if you're out there and you're really into lost footage, please find us the Mill Creek Mall Demon and anything about kids. Max We. Got an? Ad that lasted. 15 minutes. It was all about driving safety. In my notes it says Club 24. I love Club 24. It's.
Awesome club 24 was a wild ride. Did they start this off doing exercises? Which was? Great. I think to clarify it was local programming for kids, the quality disc. 0. These things were recorded in a church basement or something, Yeah. No use of any kind of editing software or program. The Club 24 video had people doing exercises, but my favorite section was this part where they had these puppets, and they did not try to disguise the fact that they were controlled by adult people at all. And the video would go, let's do some safety work.
I'm gonna do something, and you're gonna tell me what's not right. And it lasted so long. But at one point in time, he brought in a baby. And it looked like a real. Human. Baby for a couple. Seconds I've got in my notes here it just says bringing a baby to pocket land. It was so good. Why do you think it's called Club 24? 4 hours a day. Ohh yeah. I'm at Google club 24. That's a joke. Sorry, I can't. Tell if you're typing or falling down the stairs. OK, well does anybody have anything else they want to add about the Saturday morning cartoons?
There's a part of me that feels like when I was a kid I had so much more thick skinned for commercials. Nowadays I'm like, oh, 30 seconds. I can't bear this. But it was like hour or two of watching this. I'm like, no, commercials are bad, but this is terrible. It's crazy to me you pay for satellite and then half the watch time is ads. If you tried to do that today you'd get laughed out of the room because it's insane. Who would want to? It's only a third of the time. Thank you very much. When TiVo came out and you could Fast forward through commercials, that was mind boggling.
Yes, there was a button on remote controls that had skipped forward 30 seconds and if you double tapped it you could skip forward 2 1/2 minutes so it would skip to the end of the commercials. That button was a game changer for recorded TV. I also feel like Chance was talking about what we could tolerate when we were younger. As a kid, I tolerate any show that came on TV. If you were watching Saturday morning, it didn't matter if there was one good show and then four bad shows and then one good show.
You just kept on trucking through all the bad shows. Yeah, let's see. Get YouTube Kids today watching Scubby toilet. Kyle, that's primetime. What are you talking about? So that is our 50th episode celebration. I can't imagine that we'll make it another 50, but I couldn't imagine that we would make it to this fifty. So who knows what the future has in store. We have two more episodes left this season and for our keeners who like to watch alongside us and be prepped for the next episode. Our next episode is a double feature based on the Ewok movies Caravan of Courage and Battle for Endor.
Has anyone seen any of these movies? We watched the animated Ewok shows. Yeah, OK. That is not what this is. I don't know. Kylan, unfortunately, is not. I have fond memories for some of the stuff in some of these movies. John, do you have anything that you'd like to warn them about or prep them for before jumping into these? Yes, I have some repressed nostalgia for giant spiders because of these movies. There is a giant fighter and caravan of courage, that is true. I find the repressed nostalgia title really funny because it implies that it's still nostalgia.
It's just like you don't want to think about that. Can we go back to the good old days when I was terrified of fighting? All right, lookout for weirdos. Praise Beethoven. Praise Beethoven and adventure, Jamie Adventure.
Sorry this is my. That's allotted. This is not breaking. Go for it. Grandma. That is what your purpose is here. We're getting a lot of work out of that witches episode. I mean, it was the best movie that we watched or something. It's true. Yeah, statistically. Don't forget to breathe. Oh my goodness. I don't forget to breathe. I forgot to breathe in and out. It happened to me. Forget to breathe in and out. Here we go. I want to hear that voice clip again because I know that the thing that I'm doing sounds nothing like it, but.
I don't know which direction is the all right. Well, I hope we don't hit an iceberg. Isn't this episode coming out before the other? One no, that's a. Callback now. That's a callback now. Chance you're going to give your 18 lines from that movie.
